Best way to survey farmers without getting terrible response rates?

Running a study on fertilizer buying habits and farmers are notoriously hard to reach. Anyone found a channel or format that actually works?

Farmers respond way better to phone interviews than online surveys in my experience — we hit 34% response rates on an ag study last year just by calling during early morning or post-harvest windows. Also try going through co-ops or ag retailers as a distribution channel since farmers already trust them. Keep it under 10 minutes and lead with something relevant to their operation and you'll see a big jump.
