300 can work for top-line directional insights, but I'd push to at least 400-500 if your client wants to cut the data by demographics like age or region — otherwise your subgroups get thin fast. For a mid-size CPG study, 400 with quotas on age and gender usually hits the sweet spot without blowing the budget.
