How do you track shifting consumer habits in personal care?

We're trying to understand if people are trading down to cheaper brands or just buying less overall. Any go-to methods for this kind of thing?

For trading down vs. buying less, I'd combine Nielsen/Circana panel data to track actual unit volume and price tier shifts alongside a quick survey asking about purchase frequency changes. The panel data is really the key — it'll show you if private label share is growing in the category, which is usually the clearest signal of trading down. If you don't have access to syndicated data, even a 200-person pulse survey with a few category-level spend questions can get you directionally there fast.
